Next in History Lab
  • Seminar: Steven Taylor (Leicester) - Lunatic Children, 1845-1900: Constructing the Insane Child in England's County Asylums, Thursday 4 October, 17:30 – 19:30, Room STB5, Basement, Stewart House, 32 Russell Square, London, WC1B 5DN
    Children were regularly admitted to pauper lunatic asylums during the nineteenth century but an investigation into the illnesses they suffered and what it meant to be a child lunatic is yet to be conducted. This paper intends to address these issues using examples from the patient case-files of five county institutions.

  • Workshop: Wish I Knew That Then, Wednesday 10 October, 17:30 – 19:30, G21a - Senate House Malet St, Camden, London WC1E 7HU
    Three historians, Paul Cowdel (Hertfordshire), Anna Vaughn Kett (Brighton) and George Campbell Gosling (Oxford) who recently completed, offer advice for those starting a History PhD.
    The event will be followed by the History Lab Social at the Queen's Larder, 1 Queen Square, WC1 - All welcome
  • Meet the Historians of Popular Culture: Wednesday 17 October, 18:00 – 20:00 Room 104 Senate House (Torrington Room)
    Lucy Robinson (University of Sussex, Matt Worley (University of Reading) and Marcus Collins (University of Loughborough) discuss their career paths and current work.
  • History Lab Committee Members: As this is the start of the new academic year, it is an ideal time to join the committee and get involved. Roles are varied, and we meet once a fortnight in term time. Being part of the committee gives you a say in the kind of events we organise, expands your network, does wonders for the skills section of your CV - and can be fun!

Workshop
  • Meet the Archivists! Fancy exploring treasure troves of untapped historical sources? Want to find out how you can use business archives in your undergraduate, master's or PhD research?
    The BAC is holding a one-day workshop on 29th November 2012 where you can meet the archivists and find out how.
    The workshop aims to explore ways in which new research students can identify and use business records in a surprising variety of different research fields. Participants will be able to explore the vast and varied materials available at many of the UK's major and minor business archives.
    Now in its fifth year, this event will be hosted by The British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) in the Phoenix Centre, Phoenix Place, London WC1 (note that the Phoenix Centre is just along the road from the BPMA itself) . Following a successful formula from previous years, the day will commence with an archives skills workshop run by eminent academic historians, followed by a buffet lunch, where participants will be able to meet the archivists.
    Confirmed attendees at the lunchtime archives fair include the archivists of BPMA, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, Marks & Spencer, The Rothschild Archive, The Baring Archive and The Bank of England. Participants will have the opportunity to speak with these archivists, and others, to find out what types of primary materials are available for their research.

Call for papers
  • Voluntary Action History Society Conference, University of Huddersfield, 10-12 July 2013. Keynote speakers: Professor Ellen Ross and Professor Barry Doyle.
    We invite proposals for individual papers or panels of three papers on six themes:
    Activism and campaigning;
    Humanitarianism and relief;
    State and voluntary action;
    Cooperation and mutualism;
    Leisure and voluntary action;
    Wars and voluntarism.
    Papers might address these themes at any level form the local to the global and we would be especially interested in papers that take a transnational approach to their subject. In particular VAHS welcomes papers covering earlier time periods and under-researched subjects, as well as papers by new researchers and PhD students.

    The deadline for proposals is 31 December 2012. Proposals of 250 words should be submitted to p.grant@city.ac.uk by this date. Please indicate which theme your paper or panel fits. If you have an idea for a panel and would like help finding collaborators, please also get in touch.

Conference
  • The German Historical Institute London (GHIL) would welcome applications for its 2013 PhD Student Conference (10-11 January 2013). Its intention is to give postgraduate research students in the UK and Ireland working on German history an opportunity to present their work-in-progress, and to discuss it with other students working in the same field. The Institute also aims to present itself as a research centre for German history in London, and to introduce postgraduates to the facilities it offers as well as to the Institute's Research Fellows. Please note that all 2nd and 3rd year students are encouraged to present a paper on their PhD project.
    On the morning of Thursday 10 January 2013 there is a planned course on Paleography to read German handwriting. If you are interested in taking part in the Thursday morning course, please confirm your attendance in your registration.
    If you are interested in attending next year's postgraduate students' conference (Thursday 10 to Friday 11 January 2013), please inform the Secretary (email: abellamy@ghil.ac.uk) before 30 November 2012 and include the following details:
    full contact details (including email address and telephone number),
    the exact title of your project,
    the date you started your project,
    the name, address, email address and phone number of your university and supervisor,
    confirmation whether you have undertaken research in Germany,
    and confirm whether you wish to participate in the Paleography course scheduled for the morning of Thursday 10 January 2013.
    Please note that accommodation and/or travel reimbursement claims can only be considered for those eligible and who attend the entire event.
